1. Amy Cuddy: Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are
Amy Cuddy is a professor at Harvard Business School where she studies how nonverbal behavior affects people across all walks of life. She teaches how to “power pose,” showing how the poses you take can influence how others see you and how you see yourself. Whether you’re pitching to clients, working at the counter of your shop, making a public speech or presentation, or even appearing in an online video or ad for your company, this talk is one to watch.
2. Simon Sinek: How Great Leaders Inspire Action
Simon Sinek began Sinek Partners, an advertising agency, in 2002 and despite being quite successful left once his passion for the work abated. He has since looked for the ‘why’ in what people do. He asks people to instead of asking ‘what’ they want customers to do, to ask ‘why’ they should do it. This is a particularly interesting talk if you’re looking for ways to resonate more with your customers and prospects.
3. Jason Fried: Why Work Doesn’t Happen At Work
Jason Fried is co-founder and president of the Chicago-based company 37signals, which specializes in building web-based productivity tools. He believes that the office isn’t where the majority of work gets done. In this talk he offers three suggestions to make work better. Small business owners will be some of the first people to understand this sentiment – have a watch to get some inspiration around how to embrace that theory and make the most of your time off site.
4. Susan Cain: The Power of Introverts
Susan Cain shows that extroverts do not have all the power in the world of business. Cain is a former corporate lawyer and self-proclaimed introvert who believes in empowering the quiet and thoughtful instead of wasting the talent they offer. If your business has even just one or two employees, this is a must watch for you. Understanding and relating to different personalities is crucial to managing people – and bringing out their best.
5. Brené Brown: The Power of Vulnerability
Brené Brown wrote the book on human connection (really, you can grab your own copy here). Really connecting with one another can be a challenge – and even more so when we’re connecting online. This TED Talk is a real eye opener in the way we perceive ourselves and the people around us; the shift in perspective that can be found after only 20 minutes will equip you with an surprising kit of new communication tools.
6. Richard St. John: Success is a Continuous Journey
Richard St. John tells the story of his own big success and the quick failure that followed. Every business owner we’ve talked to has some experience with both successes and failures – trial and error are an important part of making a business work. Watch this TED Talk for a little solidarity and some inspiration on how to cope, how to maximize your successes, and how to do it over and over again without any loss of enthusiasm.
7. Arianna Huffington: How to Succeed? Get More Sleep
Arianna Huffington, co-founder and editor-In-chief of The Huffington Post, shares the power of a good nights sleep. She urges you to stop bragging about how little sleep you get and start sleeping your way into smart decisions and productivity. There is a lot to be said for putting you first – we all know it makes us healthier, more clear headed, more capable and yet we still find it hard to prioritize. We would also recommend outsourcing or working with a partner where you can – like having Vivial handle your business’ digital marketing, for instance – so you can focus on you and your business.
TED has conferences around the globe every year and their library of speeches expands almost daily. If you’re ever in need of some quick inspiration, check out these talks or head over to TED.com for your conference on the go.
