You’ve heard the name, probably know some of the jargon, maybe even have an account, but what do you really know about Instagram?
One of the fastest growing social media platforms, Instagram is becoming a necessity for your small business to showcase itself through a network that is solely based on visuals.
Why should small businesses join Instagram?
Show people the ins and outs of the company from a personal level
Ability to reach a wider audience that may not be on your other social profiles
Create interactive campaigns and competitions that allow for easy photo sharing
Produce stunning photos with the ease of basic editing and filters that will turn any photo into a work of art
It’s a lot of fun!
There are many things that you can do with Instagram that make it unique and unlike other social networks. There’s a reason why it’s growing so fast and attracting so many new users.
There are currently 150 million active users with over 55 million photos a day being posted on average. Think of all those people you could be reaching out to.
Let’s get going!
Getting Started on Instagram
It’s incredibly easy to get started. Download the app, available in the iTunes app store and Google play, and either sign up with Facebook or your email. Choose an available username, password, add your bio, and you’re already off to a nice start!
When you’re first setting everything up, make sure it’s cohesive with your other profiles. For example, use your Twitter handle as your Instagram username, and include a link to your website. You can also add your phone number.
Understanding your Instagram Account
Once you have your profile setup, start exploring and find people to follow. The more you follow, the more people see you, and the more followers you’ll get. Tell your friends on Facebook about your new account and invite them to follow you as well.
Start to look around, see what other people are posting, and begin to feel comfortable with how the app works. If this sounds intimidating, just start testing buttons. There is nothing you can do to mess it up. The more buttons you test out, the more you’ll begin to see how it works and better understand how to use it to your advantage.
So, let’s begin with your profile. You’ll be able to see your:
How many users you’re following
You’ll also have the ability to geo-target your location and see photos that you were tagged in.
At any time you are able to edit your profile and change your information.
Defining the Buttons
Now onto finding and creating content. The first button is Home. It shows you everything your friends are posting, allowing you to Like or Comment on them. You can also see where they were when they created the post.
Explore what others are posting.
Next, is Explore. Search users and hashtags, very similar to how you would in Twitter, and see any interesting users pop up that you might find interesting. Also, see what keywords that may apply to your business and what people are saying.
Take a Photo or Video.
Third is actually creating a Photo or Video. You can choose from your Photo Library, or create a new one, pick your filter, add some edits, and post away. Either send it out across your profile or as a direct message.
Hint on filters: the most liked and shared filter is #nofilter. People like to see the real thing, especially when it’s stunning all its own.
Last, but not least, Updates and News. See:
