Do you ever feel like the odds are stacked against you? Do you ever feel like you’re trying to claw your way to the top, and maybe—just maybe—everyone has written you off? As a local business operator, clamoring for your slice of the American dream can be overwhelming, daunting and just plain exhausting. But given a chance, the right tools and a whole lot of determination—you can be successful.
As we ponder how to enjoy big wins as a small business owner, let’s consider the Cinderella story coming from the ski slopes of South Korea. 22-year-old Ester Ledecka—a Czech snowboarder first and foremost—shocked the world when she won gold in the women’s super-G. Coming from 26th position, she barreled down the mountain and stole the gold medal while no one was paying attention. And she did it on borrowed skis.
There’s so much to be learned here. First, never ever let yourself feel like you’re out of the game. It ain’t over til’ the Czech lady skis! There’s always purpose in standing at the top of that mountain, looking down at the cold hard path in front of you and taking the leap, headlong. Marketing your business may seem like a cold, hard battle – but in the end, all you really need to do is start. Once you get your momentum, it’s all downhill (in a good way). But the fact of the matter is, the only way you lose when it comes to marketing is by never even starting.
Our second takeaway here is that you don’t need to be the world’s leading expert to be successful. So, marketing isn’t your area of expertise—no biggie. You’re operating a business—which means you’re an expert in your industry. Believe it or not, many of the same skills and much of the same knowledge that got you to where you are in business will help build your marketing strategy and grow your business. Ledecka wasn’t the top super-G skier. Her expertise is in snowboarding. But, she took the skills she had mastered and applied them to the super-G slopes. Boom. She wins gold.
Finally, this Cinderella story teaches us that you can achieve so much success just given the right tools. Ledecka won gold while competing on skis borrowed from US skier Mikaela Shiffrin. Now, we’re not saying that the skis won gold—that would minimize the hard work and athleticism of Ledecka. But, at the end of the day, even the best skier in the world couldn’t compete at a world-class level without top-notch equipment. It’s the same with you and your business—the right tools and equipment can really level the playing field between you and your competitors, giving you every bit as much chance of being successful.
Looking back over these winter games, there are countless lessons to be learned. Whether its a lesson like this from the super-G or learning how the right pairing of teammates can produce historic results (think Alex and Maia Shibutani—the brother and sister figure skating duo, or the cross-country skiing pair of Kikkan Randall and Jessie Diggins who won the first ever US gold in their event), these Games have our inspiration running deep. One thing is for sure—we’re pretty excited about the work we get to do every day helping businesses like yours have their own Olympic success.
